What Are Implant Dentures?

Dental implants are prosthetic tooth roots; they are small titanium posts that get surgically placed beneath the gumline. After they bond with the surrounding tissue, they are able to serve as an incredibly strong base of support for dentures. Implant dentures look and feel similar to natural teeth. They are stronger than traditional dentures and tend to last much longer as well.

Depending on your circumstances, we might recommend that you get either a fixed/permanent or removable implant denture.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

Permanent implant dentures can only be removed by a dental professional. Since they stay in your mouth 24/7, you can treat them almost exactly like natural teeth when you are eating, speaking, and attending to oral hygiene. Their biggest downside is that they require more implants than removable dentures, so they require greater jawbone density.

Removable Implant Dentures

Removable implant dentures snap onto and off of small attachments on top of dental implants. They should be removed daily for oral hygiene purposes. They usually require just 2 – 5 implants to stay in place, so they are often ideal for patients who have already lost some bone density in their jaw.

The Implant Denture Procedure

The implant denture procedure has four main steps:

  • We make sure you are a candidate for dental implants and start planning the details of your procedure.
  • Implant placement. We surgically place the implants at pre-planned positions in your jawbone.
  • The implants bond with the surrounding tissue over a period of a few months. Then, we place small connector pieces (abutments) on top of them.
  • You receive your beautiful new teeth.

The complete implant denture procedure can take several months to a year or longer, but the results are well worth the wait!

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

You might be a candidate for implant dentures if:

  • You have lost all or most of your teeth throughout a dental arch.
  • Your jawbone is strong enough to support dental implants.
  • You are in fair oral and overall health.
  • You have good habits that will support your implants’ long-term success. For example, you should have a thorough oral hygiene routine.

If you are not currently a candidate for implant dentures, you may become one after some preliminary treatments. Almost anyone can qualify for this treatment!

Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants

Implant dentures offer some truly remarkable benefits:

  • You may gain a bite force that rivals that of natural teeth, allowing you to eat even tough and chewy foods.
  • Implant dentures look and feel incredibly natural.
  • Jawbone preservation. Dental implants stimulate the jawbone and can prevent the deterioration that normally occurs after tooth loss.
  • Whereas traditional dentures may need to be replaced every 5 – 7 years, implant dentures can last much longer. In fact, dental implants may last a lifetime!
  • Easy maintenance. Caring for implant dentures does not require a lot of time or effort.
  • Excellent value. Although implant dentures cost more than their traditional counterparts, their many benefits make them a great monetary value!
