Dental crowns have restored the structure, appearance, and function of countless teeth that have suffered decay or injury, and they can allow a person to retain their complete smile despite severe dental infection in many cases. However, it’s understandable that you might be anxious about getting one if you’re worried that the procedure might hurt. Here’s a brief guide to how dental crowns are placed as well as how your dentist will ensure your comfort.

How Are Dental Crowns Placed?

Each dental crown is carefully crafted for a perfect fit using detailed measurements of your teeth, and the appliance can usually be placed in as few as two appointments. During the first, your dentist will administer a local anesthetic to render the whole process painless before removing any decayed material from your tooth. They will then take an impression of your bite and send the results to a trusted dental lab where your final appliance will be manufactured. You’ll receive a temporary crown to wear until then and be sent on your way.

You’ll come back to your dentist’s office about two weeks later for the second appointment. Then, your dentist will remove the temporary restoration from your tooth and cement your final crown in place. After any final adjustments to ensure that the piece works and fits right, you’ll be ready to show off your restored grin.

Does Receiving a Dental Crown Hurt?

Before placing your dental crown, your dentist will administer a local anesthetic to render the whole process painless. While the procedure should not hurt, you can expect some discomfort while recovering afterward. Thankfully, this can be managed by taking over-the-counter pain medication,  avoiding chewing with the tooth while the cement is still setting, and practicing excellent oral hygiene. However, contact your dentist for assistance if your discomfort seems to be getting worse after several days.

If your dentist recommends a dental crown, you can rest assured that it is the best way to preserve your oral health and beautiful smile. Thankfully, the procedure is painless, and you can expect your tooth to be completely comfortable after a brief and mild recovery period.
